On the Pumpkin Bandwagon

28 Sep

Well good morning loves and happy Friday! It’s been a crazy week; lots of office work, teaching group fitness, classes, and preparing for Sunday’s Brooksie Way Half Marathon! I’ve heard wonderful things about the course so I’m super excited that it’s my first half marathon in Michigan!

lucky bib # 579

Rachelle and I will be starting the race together but I’ve been informed- “DO NOT run with me!” Don’t you feel the love?!

I’m meeting one of the social media guru’s with the company I recently started working with; fingers crossed that I’ll have some AMAZE BALLS news for you come tomorrow! It may involve wearing an outfit and writing a review about it right here..who knows!?

Last night I taught Abs, Glutes, and Thighs at the Rec center! The workout will be posted on Workout Wednesday-stay tuned 🙂 I appreciate the social media department advertising my classes!

ESPECIALLY when one of the attendees (a fave one I may add) still thinks about me after the class with a shout out tweet  :).

love what I do!

Things I’ve been loving lately:

  • pumpkin. first purchase was Dunkin Donuts Pumpkin Spice coffee. I like it but need a better way of drinking it..any suggestions? I like sweetness but don’t want to start on artificial sweeteners.
  • sparkling ice. a naturally flavored mountain spring water that has zero calories. if you like pop but want to wean yourself off of it, I highly recommend trying this! It’s fizzy and tingly going down but you won’t feel guilty about drinking one ortwoorthreeorfour a day. (Sparkling Ice did not ask me to review this product; I’m just obsessed; these are my own thoughts 🙂 ).
  • almond, peanut, & cashew butter. scrumptious. my friend, Sarah, introduced me to this last year and I just now decided to keep it as a staple..sometimes I question myself..OIAJ= 1/3c. oats, heaping spoonfuls of Greek yogurt, splashes of almond milk, chia seeds, banana all mixed into the almost-empty jar.

Is anyone else running in the Brooksie Way 5k or half marathon?

How do you drink your pumpkin spice coffee?

Hello Oakland University!

20 Aug

What a busy week it’s been!

Moving up to Michigan on Sunday, unpacking all my junkthings, setting up my room, making trips to Target, getting some-what settled, and saying bye to my parents all happened in one day.

One. Day. I tell ya..my family is really starting to get used to all of this moving-to-a-different-state-and-back-in-one-day business. I’m not sure if that’s something to brag about but I’m very blessed to have wonderful parents :). Not to mention our family-love for Starbucks helps fuel the trips :-P.

I made it passed the first week as a GA! It’s definitely going to take a longer-ish time to get adjusted but that’s to be expected, no? I’m taking one day at a time and planning for the best; thankfully I came from one OUTSTANDING fitness program with AMAZEBALLS people to another one with lots and lots of opportunities. Being at OU and working within Campus Recreation, it is much different from my work as a student director at NC State but in a good way; I’m anxious to get the semester started come September!

I spent the majority of the first week meeting the professional staff, attending staff meetings, learning the fitness equipment, navigating offices, and meeting the student staff that’s here for the summer (we don’t start fall semester doesn’t until after Labor day (yay!), so things are pretty chill around here). Since I’m the GA of group fitness, I want the next couple of weeks to be focused on learning the ins and outs of the program, the instructors, the rules and policies, and the equipment available before we start the fall schedule and students expect things from me! It’s really the perfect opportunity to get acclimated with the program before being the semester gets crazy..in a good way :-D.

The first OIAJ at Oakland! In the mix:

  • the remaining cookie butter
  • oats
  • yogurt
  • almond milk
  • chia seeds

Pre-made salads from Trader Joe’s! The meal plan I have on campus doesn’t start until September and since I’m close enough to Pitt that I can go home on the weekends before school starts, I’ve been relying on pre-made salads and easy to assemble lunches and dinners to feed me. Once the semester begins, I’ll be staying at school more and then I’ll finally stock-up on groceries!

Here’s a kick-butt workout I completed earlier in the week:

  • walking lunges, jump squats, elbow planks & glute extensions, sumo burpees. 20-16-10-6 reps, 1X through.
  • 10 T-push-ups, 20 mountain climbers, 30 floor jacks, 40 bicycles, 50s. plank. 2X through.
  • 10 v-sits, 20 plank knee-tucks, 20 russian twists, 20 back extensions. 2X through.

And for all of my FALL lovers out there..is this a sign?

Day 43

19 Jul

I did it!

Cycle & Stretch=complete! If you follow me on Instagram (keptyoufit), you’ve known that I’ve been planning this class forever with the numerous pictures of my playlists and what not..well this morning was show time! Up-and-adam at 5:15am to prepare breakfast and make a measly cup of coffee to perk me up- I was on the road by 5:45am.

Once I got into work, I made sure my NEW playlist worked; I got home last night to transfer all of my songs onto my iPod and realized the CD that I burned them to decided not to copy all of the songs. Great. I re-created a playlist with what I had in my library, tweaked a couple of songs, and felt even better about this playlist!

I had 5 people, which my supervisors told me was a normal amount for 6:30am (I tend to take low participation personal-a flaw). Here’s the workout: don’t hate. I’m not using the right cycling “lingo” but it makes sense to me and that’s all that matters 😉

  1. warm-up. good time (owl city & carly rae jepsen).
  2. rolling hill. somebody that I used to know (Avici remix). 3 turns up, 3 turns down, 3 turns up, 3 turns down.
  3. ups & downs. call me maybe (carly rae jepsen). up for 8 counts, down for 8 counts.
  4. standing climb. wild ones (florida feat. sia). increased every tempo change.
  5. sprints. lunar (david guetta feat. afrojack). increased speed every ~30 seconds. best song to sprint to, it builds energy into your legs and they just want to explode when it’s time to go!
  6. sprints (2 songs). part of me (katy perry) and marry the night (lady gaga).
  7. standing & hovers. good girl (carrie underwood). incorporated isolations in this track (only your lower body moves, very slowly).
  8. out of the seat climb. turn me on (nicki minaj)
  9. cool down. don’t hold your breath (nicole scherzinger).

This ~45 minutes of cycling was followed by 15 minutes of stretching. I felt SO confident about teaching this class because it was all me. My songs, my way, my pace. Call me greedy, selfish, egotistic, but I like teaching cycling way more than taking cycling simply for that reason- it’s MINE. Muhahahaaaa

Post-cycle & a marvelous stretch-sesh I may add, I got the urge to row? Yes, I just felt like I wanted to row, so I plopped myself down on the rower and completed 20 minutes. I switched my hands from a supinated to pronated grip every 5 minutes to work my upper body differently. It was cool.

Time to refuel!

OIAC with a less-than-ripe peach and cookie butter. The peach was actually perfect; not too soft that as I bit into the pieces I had juice running down my chin but hard enough to be edible..did I confuse anyone?

I had a coffee date with Liz!  I haven’t seen her in over a year so it was such a nice surprise that she happened to be driving through and called to catch-up. Miss ya!!

Two of the women I work with that were involved in the internship process took me out to lunch on campus today! It was very sweet of them and I’ll miss them very much :-/.

Equipment cleaning, slide board training, drinks, and sushi are what’s next! It’s my last night in Raleigh so I have lots of people to say bye see ya later to :-P.

Day 34

6 Jul

↑ This is what happens after a glorious 3.5 mile plyo-interval run ↓

I should probably think of a new way to wear my hair, especially if I’m jumping and running around like a crazy person at 6am! Any suggestions from my fellow long-haired exercisers? I would love to be gifted enough to braid my hair but..it never looks attractive.

The run: Lake Johnson has mile-markers every 1/4 mile around the trail so you can track your distance if you don’t use Nike+ or a Garmin. I got to thinking, how can I use this to my advantage? It’s too hot to run longer than 30 minutes and I wanted to get some lower body plyometrics in before I taught Body Sculpt. Aha! At every marker, complete 20-ish reps of plyo exercises, then continue running. Here’s how the workout looked (I started at the 1 mile marker):

  1. 1 mile= squat jumps
  2. 1.25 miles= jump-switch lunges
  3. 1.5 miles= plie squat jumps
  4. 1.75 miles= right jump lunges, left jump lunges
  5. 2 miles= star jumps
  6. 2.25 miles= mountain climbers
  7. 2.5 miles= speed skaters
  8. 2.75 miles= plank jacks
  9. 3 miles= 2-pulse squats, 180 jump, 2-pulse squats
  10. 3.25 miles= 10 burpees
  11. 3.5 miles= 10 burpees
  12. .25 mile= squat jumps
  13. .5 mile= jump-switch lunges
  14. .75 mile= plank jacks

Breakfast quickly followed; a first for me, OIAJ! I finally, and sadly, ate the cookie butter down to just the right amount so I can use the jar and put the oats, yogurt, almond milk, and vanilla extract in for the highly acclaimed-bloggers’ breakfast:

I may have overfilled it a tad, but the more the merrier 🙂 That was a lip-smacker. Mhm..

I taught Body Sculpt today, nothing cray-cray. Great class though!

Have a happy Friday and happier weekend!

Day 27

26 Jun

I’m really getting used to waking up at 5:15am..not sure if that’s a good or bad thing!

I taught Body Sculpt & Stretch at 6:30am; great class with awesome participants! I felt more comfortable with this class than the first Body Sculpt I taught at my internship. I might have been trying to teach like everyone else in order for the participants to like me, which is just silly!

I rounded out the workout with intervals on the elliptical (30 seconds OFF-45 seconds ON). Breakfast followed in the form of OIAC-so easy to transport!

I took the personal training coordinator through an equipment orientation and a tour of the facilities as if she were a real client; I pass (if you will) and will start to take real clients through! However, I’ve decided I don’t want to focus solely on actual training sessions for 2 reasons:

  1. the program here is completely different from anything I’ve done previously and anything I’ll do in the future. I know I won’t get adapted to it but I prefer to stay in-sync with my training style for now.
  2. I’m not here that much longer and hate to start a routine that I won’t be unable to follow-up with the client.

I’m content with my assignments in regards to the personal training program, especially since I started teaching group fitness and am working on wellness profiles.

I attended Yoga Stretch before lunch; my lower back is SO sore and I’m not sure if it’s from an exercise or sitting on a stability ball as a chair. “Excess may do you harm”, is there such a thing as too much spinal stability that I’m irritating my low back instead? Thoughts, comments, Kt you’re crazies?

I taught the dynamic warm-up and lower body portion of Strength Training for Runners. We focused on the BOSU ball and did lots of exercises that incorporated stability and coordination-fun shtuff!

Staff meeting ended the day and I couldn’t be more ready to go home, lay by the pool, and read with Christian Grey. See ya tomorrow!

Day 18

7 Jun

G-double O-D M-O-R-N-I-N-G!

3.5 mile run around Lake Johnson-check! OIAJContainer-check! Early morning client-check! 2 cups of coffee-check! I’m feeling like today is going to be very accomplishing!

When the yogurt container is near empty, I pour my oats right into it instead of dirtying a bowl..hence OIAC A dollop of cookie butter right smack in the center that’s waiting to be devoured. I wait until there’s no more oats left then eat the entire spoonful of cookie butter; a mouthful of cookie butter is a-okay by me :).

Once I put my things down in my office, I was on the go until lunchtime. I observed an equipment orientation-like session and a full PT session. The trainer I shadowed spotted exercises in a way I never thought of spotting before. For example, during a chest press, instead of hovering around the clients’ wrists to spot the weight going down, she stood to one side of the bench and positioned her arms like 2 bumpers, one in front and one behind the weight. I like this technique because a lot of clients’ I’ve trained seem to bring the weight higher above their chest (shoulders) when it’s supposed to be nipple line mid-chest; having those “bumpers” guide the clients’ arm down helps develop kinesthetic awareness during the exercise. Also, it’s not has uncomfortable for the client to have the trainer standing above him/her. Add that to my to-do list as a trainer!

Lunch was again eaten too fast-I just can’t seem to put food down when it’s so good! Mayo-less chicken salad sandwich with cuckes, peanut butter-filled pretzels, and a banana.

This was sitting on my desk after lunch. A VH-what? How in the world am I going to watch this? I think it’s awesome, don’t get me wrong, and I want to watch Introduction to the Step Training but I don’t know who has a tape player these days! Maybs I’ll ask my gramma 🙂

Have a fabulous Thursday!
