Add 1 Mile To That

TGIF!

I’m not sure where your whereabouts are, but it’s a gorgey day in Rochester MI! Fall is right around the corner and you can tell by the crisper mornings and cooler nights. I’m no vampire or emo but I love the dark, both later in the mornings and earlier in the evenings :).

Last night was my first Abs, Glutes, & Thighs class at OU! With that kind of name, it attracts a lot of the girls (who woulda thunk) and I had a smallish group of 11 lovely ladies who glistened, burned, and had an hour filled of fun! As much as I love a huge group of participants, like the Spring Break a Sweat class I taught at NC State, a smaller group offers just as much satisfaction because:

  1. you can connect with the participants on a more personal level. getting to know their names and having a conversation instead of just teaching at them.
  2. it’s not as intimidating to suggest an exercise they want to do or region they want to work when they’re surrounded by the same people every week.
  3. as an instructor, you can really see their progress; not only in fitness but in their body awareness, appreciation, self efficacy and esteem as well. on the fitness aspect, maybe when the class started they performed push-ups on their knees and by the end of the semester, they’re doing them on their toes! in their body awareness, their form has improved tremendously to where they can actually feel when they’re doing it correctly/incorrectly; focusing on what their body can do rather than what it struggles with (notice I didn’t say can’t!); self efficacy is strengthened by realizing they’re capable of reaching their goals and not giving up; and their self-esteem sky-rockets simply because when we exercise, we feel good about ourselves.

This morning started with another run around campus! I’m telling you, OU has some serious hills! I ran the same route as before (minus the intervals) but did it twice around. I then wanted another hill (say whaaaaaat) so instead of stopping at the Rec center:

  • continue on Pioneer Drive. you’ll stay straight (or veer right) on the road and NOT turn onto Ravine Drive (a parking lot and the soccer fields will be on your left)
  • enjoy running down the hill.
  • make a U-ey and trek back up the hill. try not to lean too far forward; it restricts your breathing and actually makes it harder because your weight is forward rather than upright.
  • now turn onto Ravine Drive
  • turn right onto Meadow Brook Road and continue until you reach the stop sign.
  • make another U-ey back towards the Rec center.

When you’re finished, you’ve added ~1ish more miles! Make sure you properly cool down and stretch those muscles!

Day 21

Thank you Pinterest for your words of wisdom :). An early morning workout was the first to-do on my agenda today; I trained at 8am, so I wanted to push myself and get the weights workout done in an hour-check!

Quick overnight oats with cookie butter for breakfast before I trained; it’s the most portable breakfast I know!  I stole borrowed these tin cans from my parents that, I believe, are used for camping; they come in 5 different sizes with lids which make transporting breakfast, lunch, or dinner so easy. There’s really no excuse to not make your own meals!

I can’t believe it’s already half-way through my internship! My supervisor from NC State had his on-site visit this morning; where does the time go? I gave him a tour of the facility (kinda cool I was able to and knowledgeable enough to lead the tour!) then sat down and discussed everything from I’ve been doing and where I’m going next. I felt extremely blessed and grateful to have this internship and being able to have the freedom to pop into a workout class or shadow a trainer or work at my desk all day long. After hearing some of the other students’ internship experiences, I really have it good; I don’t get assigned biatch busy work (thank you!), I have a schedule but not a schedule at the same time, and I’m getting my toes wet in all areas of fitness; it’s so laid-back yet organized and professional and I enjoy working in this type of environment!

We talked about being a rounded individual and how students these days are so focused on one area that they’re actually limiting their chances of ever working in that specific area because they’re not getting other experiences in a variety of fields. It made me re-realize that, yes I love group fitness and personal training, but I both need and want to get a taste of wellness profiles, rehabilitation and injury, facilities, sports clubs, and on-site services that will make me a more qualified individual.

I swear I ate the last of the mayo-less chicken salad! Peanut butter-filled pretzels with a banana to go with. Strength training for runners and a staff meeting capped off the afternoon. I was supposed to meet with one of the Step instructors to go over Stepping for Dummies (kidding) but couldn’t find her; I guess I’ll have to resort to the high-quality Blu-Ray VHS video to teach me how to instruct Step aerobics!

 Black cherry Greek yogurt with slivered, toasted almonds as an afternoon snack :-P.

Can’t wait for this view tomorrow afternoon..

NC State Class of 2012

It’s official! I am an NC STATE ALUMNISaying that gives me the goosebumps; I still can’t believe it happened-SO SURREAL! I don’t think graduation could have gone any better; my family was here, the weather was perfect, everyone was in a great mood, and I didn’ttripwhenI walked across the stage with my “diploma” in hand! The weekend only got better with a delicious post-grad meal at The Pit; authentic, hardy and sloppy BBQ with lots of drinks! The only way to top Saturday was to spend Sunday with my lovely family, especially on Mother’s day. 

 Guess who?

Philip Rivers! Quarterback for the San Diego Chargers and an NC State alumna! He gave our commencement speech (which I thought was beautifully written) that sent an empathizing message to all of the graduates. Not only is he a talented athlete, but he also plays an active role in giving back to the community. We hear about athletes these days and the mostly bad situations they get into but rarely hear how some athletes give back to their respective charities, beneficiaries, and communities. Kudos to NC State for picking an awesome speaker!!

On Sunday, my family and I enjoyed a drink at Starbucks followed by a walk around Lake Johnson.

Unfortunately we couldn’t spend all of Mother’s day together as they had quite a drive back to Pittsburgh, but at least we got to be together the entire weekend! I’m so grateful for them :).

The End Finally Is Here!

4 years, 121 credit hours, an infinity number of lattes, and countless stressful/overwhelming/amazing/ best-time-of-my-life years later and…

I’M FINISHED!!!

With the exception of finals, my undergraduate career at NC State was complete yesterday (Thursday) at 2:45pm. It didn’t really hit me that I was sitting in my last class of undergrad until later that night when I met up with some friends, talking about what’s next. It also occurred to me that, being from Pittsburgh, there’s a 99% chance I’ll never see some of these people again; not that I’m a debby-downer, but things are a-changin’! Crazy to look back and see how fast it really does go! On a sentimental note: my mom’s background of her phone is still a picture of me she took freshman year before they left me all alone.
